I enjoy pushing new AI models to their limits. I’m not sure if this counts as creative work—in fact, I very much suspect that it doesn’t. However, the results are sometimes funny enough that I want to share them.
ChatGPT
I had an unhealthy amount of fun making ChatGPT act as a writer:
- “The Quasi-Demons,” generated on December 14, 2022, uploaded here on December 18, 2022. For some reason, I thought that it would be fun to have ChatGPT write a plot summary for a new Discworld story. (GNU Sir Terry Pratchett.) The outcome... well, it sure was a story with characters from the Discworld.
- “Evil Rincewind,” generated on December 14, 2022, uploaded here on December 18, 2022. I decided to give ChatGPT another chance at Discworld fanfiction. The outcome was still quite inconsistent with the actual books.
- “Lepanto,” generated on December 15, 2022, uploaded here on December 18, 2022. “How good are AI at making sea shanties?” is a question I’m fairly certain nobody has ever asked. I chose the Battle of Lepanto as a decently obscure topic. The outcome was very... crusader-y.
- “There’s No Way My Expectations Can Be This Great,” generated on December 15, 2022, uploaded here on December 23, 2022. Have you ever wondered what the classic Great Expectations would look like if it were a Japanese light novel? No? Well I did! While it took some prompt engineering, ChatGPT was finally able to show me what an awful question this was.
- “Star Wars: The Wrath of (Genghis) Khan,” generated on the December 15, 2022 version of ChatGPT, uploaded here on February 1, 2023. Continuing my journey to get ChatGPT to write fanfiction, I turned my attention to Star Wars. In particular, ChatGPT was to replace Han Solo with the mighty Genghis Khan. I expected a simple name replacement, but instead I got something a bit more original.
- “Britishly British,” generated on the January 9, 2023 version of ChatGPT, uploaded here on February 1, 2023. I asked ChatGPT to be British. Actually, scratch that; I asked it to be exceedingly British. The results were a bit more tropey and stereotypical than I would have preferred, but ChatGPT got the memo.
- “The Illuminator,” generated on the January 9, 2023 version of ChatGPT, uploaded here on February 1, 2023. Next, I wanted ChatGPT to be weird and sophisticated. I’d say it succeeded; honestly, I might steal this setting.
- “The Least Funny Joke,” generated on the January 9, 2023 version of ChatGPT, uploaded here on February 1, 2023. Good humor can be hard to come by; don’t ask AI to fill the void just yet.
